Turning Fear into Unshakable Courage
Turning Fear into Unshakable Courage
My name is Aanya , and I embraced Nichiren Buddhism a little over a year before one of the greatest challenges of my life unfolded. Although I was still new in faith, I had already begun experiencing how chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo could transform my state of life. Little did I know that this conviction would soon become the foundation that carried my entire family through an extraordinary battle.
During the devastating wave of the pandemic, every member of my family contracted COVID-19. Initially, we hoped it would remain manageable, but within a few days my father's health deteriorated rapidly. His fever remained dangerously high, his oxygen levels began dropping, and every passing hour increased our anxiety.
Doctors advised immediate hospitalization. We rushed from one hospital to another, only to hear the same heartbreaking response—there were no beds available. Watching my father's condition worsen while helplessly waiting outside hospitals was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
Instead of allowing fear to consume me, I stood before the Gohonzon and continued chanting with all my heart. Even though anxiety constantly surfaced, I determined not to let it dominate my prayer. Deep within, I kept reminding myself that the Mystic Law could open a way where none seemed possible.
After nearly eight exhausting hours of searching, an intensive care bed finally became available in a reputed hospital. As my father was admitted, my heart overflowed with gratitude. I knew our struggle was far from over, but I also felt certain that the protective functions of the universe had already begun working.
Refusing to Lose Hope
The days that followed tested our faith every single moment. The doctors remained cautious about my father's prognosis, and the intensive care unit was overflowing with critically ill patients. Every day seemed to introduce a fresh complication, and at times it felt as though we had reached the limits of our endurance.
Whenever discouragement arose, I returned to chanting. I determined that regardless of how long the journey took, I would continue praying for my father's complete recovery and report a victory to my mentor.
As my daimoku deepened, something remarkable changed—not outside first, but within me. Fear gradually transformed into gratitude. I found myself appreciating the doctors, nurses, technicians, and hospital staff who were tirelessly serving patients despite overwhelming circumstances.
After nearly ten days, subtle improvements began appearing in my father's condition. Medicines that had seemed impossible to obtain became available at the right time. Plasma was arranged smoothly. One burden after another quietly dissolved.
Looking back, I realized that while my external circumstances were gradually improving, the greatest transformation had occurred inside my own heart. I had entered the hospital frightened and uncertain. Now I was responding to every challenge with calmness, conviction, and hope.
Praying Beyond My Own Family
As my life condition rose, my prayers naturally expanded. I no longer prayed only for my father's recovery. Every family sitting anxiously outside the ICU became part of my prayer. I chanted for the exhausted doctors, the nurses working endless shifts, and every patient fighting for life.
Little by little, the atmosphere around us also began changing. The medical team's updates became increasingly positive. Hope slowly replaced uncertainty.
Then another major crisis struck.
One morning, the hospital announced that its oxygen supply was critically low. Panic spread among the families of admitted patients. Many immediately began searching for alternative hospitals.
My father was far too critical to be shifted safely.
My mother and I looked at one another and silently resolved that we would not give in to fear. We immediately began arranging oxygen cylinders ourselves. Every single day required enormous effort, but somehow the required oxygen always reached my father on time. Friends, relatives, and many compassionate people stepped forward to help exactly when they were needed.
Each day strengthened my conviction that sincere prayer always reveals the wisdom to take the right action.
Changing Poison into Medicine
Eventually my father improved enough to come off advanced respiratory support. Just when we felt relieved, another setback appeared. He developed severe abdominal pain, his condition deteriorated again, and additional procedures became necessary.
Watching him suffer so intensely was heartbreaking. Yet I refused to see this as defeat.
I increased my daimoku with renewed determination, praying not only for his recovery but for every person's suffering to become the cause for profound human revolution.
Witnessing my conviction, my mother also began chanting earnestly. That moment itself felt like a tremendous victory. We spent the entire night praying together, encouraging one another with Sensei's guidance and refusing to surrender to despair.
The very next morning, experienced specialists arrived, correctly diagnosed the underlying complication, and immediately began appropriate treatment. From that point onward, my father's recovery accelerated steadily. Day after day, his condition improved until he was finally moved from intensive care to a private room.
Several days later, he walked out of the hospital and returned home.
It felt like witnessing the power of changing poison into medicine with my own life.
The Greatest Victory
When I reflect on that entire journey, I realize that my greatest victory was not simply my father's recovery. Before this experience, I never believed I possessed the strength to handle such overwhelming circumstances. Yet despite battling COVID myself, I found the courage to coordinate treatment, support my mother, make critical decisions, encourage others, and continue strengthening my faith every day.
I came to understand that great hardships truly become the gateway to great fortune when they are challenged with unwavering faith.
Every obstacle expanded my compassion. Every prayer deepened my conviction. Every challenge revealed abilities within me that I had never recognized before.
My Determination
Today, I determine to continue advancing with even stronger faith, using every experience to encourage those who are struggling. I will never allow fear to overshadow hope. Through sincere daimoku, compassionate action, and unwavering trust in the Mystic Law, I will continue transforming my karma, creating value in society, and helping many people discover the limitless courage and happiness that already exist within their own lives.
