Rising Beyond Every Limitation
By the age of seven, Kavita Mehra had already experienced devastating loss.
Her father passed away when she was still a child.
At twelve, she was sent to live at her uncle’s home, where she spent her days doing household chores.
Soon afterward, she was married off immediately after passing Grade 10.
The years that followed were harsh.
Instead of building a future, she found herself trapped in exhausting labor and emotional suffering.
At one point, she was even made to assist a mason in physical work.
Eventually, her mother brought her back home, and Kavita restarted her interrupted education.
But life tested her once again.
Her second marriage placed her into a household of thirteen people, most struggling with alcoholism.
Every rupee she earned had to be handed over to her mother-in-law.
Her days began before sunrise with household chores and ended late at night massaging her mother-in-law’s feet.
Then came one of the darkest chapters of her life.
When she became pregnant and refused pressure to abort the child, she was beaten and forced into physically demanding work in the hope that she would miscarry.
Yet amidst all this suffering, her daughter Anushka was born safely.
That child quietly became the reason Kavita decided she would no longer surrender to despair.
The Beginning of Hope
In 2005, while working at St. Lawrence High School to support herself and her daughter, Kavita encountered Nichiren Buddhism.
For the first time in her life, she discovered a philosophy that taught her that suffering was not permanent destiny.
One guidance especially stayed deeply in her heart:
“Wherever practitioners of the Lotus Sutra chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, just as an echo answers a sound and a shadow follows a form, their prayers will unfailingly produce positive results there.”
(WCHP-1, Happiness, p. 125)
Initially, her family opposed her practice strongly.
But somehow, amidst her crushing schedule, she continued chanting quietly for everyone’s happiness.
Gradually, the atmosphere around her began changing.
Within months, she was allowed to attend meetings and chant more openly.
This strengthened her conviction deeply.
Kavita began chanting for hours daily.
She walked long distances to attend meetings and support members.
Eventually, she took responsibility for a block, and later, when the block expanded into a district, she became the district chief.
For the first time, she began seeing herself not as a victim, but as someone capable of transforming lives.
Learning to Respect Her Own Life
Externally, however, the struggles at home intensified.
Arguments and violence increased.
Her daughter grew up living in constant fear.
Through daimoku and Sensei’s guidance, Kavita slowly realized something fundamental:
She herself did not yet respect her own life fully.
This realization became a major turning point.
Rather than merely enduring suffering endlessly, she made a powerful determination:
To become financially independent.
To protect her daughter.
And to ensure her child would never experience the same pain she had gone through.
She therefore challenged herself to pursue an MBA degree.
At the same time, she worked intensely on transforming her inner tendencies.
Slowly, the woman who once reacted through emotional outbursts began developing patience, calmness, and wisdom.
She learned to conduct dialogues peacefully and handle stressful situations without losing herself emotionally.
Eventually, she made the courageous decision to move out of her in-laws’ home.
That decision came at a price.
Her brothers stopped speaking to her for nearly a year.
Then one day, while she was alone at her new residence, her in-laws arrived and physically assaulted her.
She received seventeen stitches.
Yet even after such violence, she refused to abandon faith or hope.
Forging an Invincible Self
Supported by fellow members and trustees at her school, Kavita continued moving forward steadily.
She completed her B.Ed. degree.
At work, she was promoted from assistant teacher to supervisor.
Then another responsibility arrived.
Her bedridden mother was left alone by her brothers.
Kavita and her daughter moved in to care for her.
Her mother required dialysis treatment, constant care, and financial support.
Money remained extremely tight.
Singlehandedly, Kavita managed:
Her daughter’s upbringing
Household expenses
Her mother’s treatment
Her own professional responsibilities
Yet she continued basing herself on:
Daimoku
Gakkai activities
Sensei’s guidance
Her mother extended her life by four years and passed away peacefully in 2019.
Relatives who once dismissed Kavita now began praising her strength and compassion.
Then in 2020 came another breakthrough.
She became the headmistress of the primary school.
The same woman who once had no control over her own life had now become a respected educational leader.
A Mother’s Determination
Meanwhile, Anushka grew beautifully in the garden of Soka.
She developed a dream of studying in Japan.
Focused and sincere, she scored 89 percent in Grade 10.
In 2022, she received the opportunity to travel to Japan as an exchange student for eight months.
After returning, she completed Grade 12 successfully.
Yet one major challenge remained.
The family simply did not have the financial capacity to support higher studies in Japan.
Instead of giving up, mother and daughter based the challenge on faith, practice, and study.
Then, in September 2024, their prayers manifested powerfully.
Anushka secured admission to APU College in Japan with a fifty-percent scholarship.
Kavita felt as though every hardship of her life had led to this moment of victory and hope.
The daughter she had fought so hard to protect was now confidently stepping into the world.
Winning Together With Members
Deeply grateful to the Gohonzon, Kavita intensified her efforts in her chapter.
At the time, meeting attendance was low.
She began praying sincerely for members to reconnect with faith.
When changes in work timings made attendance difficult for her personally, she chanted earnestly to continue participating fully.
Gradually, the atmosphere began transforming.
Meeting attendance increased.
Four women’s division members became active regularly.
By the end of 2025, six new women’s and young women’s division members joined the chapter.
Kavita realized that her greatest joy no longer came merely from personal victories.
It came from seeing other people regain hope in their own lives.
A Line That Stayed With Me
“Wherever practitioners of the Lotus Sutra chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, just as an echo answers a sound and a shadow follows a form, their prayers will unfailingly produce positive results there.”
Reflection
Many people spend years silently enduring suffering because they stop believing they deserve happiness.
But Buddhism teaches that every human being possesses immeasurable dignity and limitless potential.
Kavita’s journey shows that human revolution often begins with one courageous realization:
“My life has value too.”
Once that realization awakens deeply, even years of pain and limitation can gradually transform into wisdom, strength, and compassion.
Key Takeaways
Human revolution begins with respecting one’s own life.
Consistent daimoku develops courage and wisdom.
Education and self-development create new possibilities.
Protecting one life sincerely can transform generations.
Encouraging others deepens one’s own faith and joy.
Forward With Determination
Today, Kavita remains deeply determined to:
Continue encouraging every member in her chapter
Support women facing difficult circumstances
Advance kosen-rufu alongside fellow members
Create even greater victories through faith, practice, and study
Above all, she remains committed to helping others discover the same hope and dignity that transformed her own life.
