Raising Courageous Children, One Life at a Time
At the age of six, Neha Arora lost her mother to cancer.
The prolonged medical treatment drained the family financially.
Her father lost his business.
There were days when survival itself depended on support from relatives.
As a young child, Neha often wondered if their destiny would ever change.
Then, in 1995, she encountered Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
In that quiet but profound moment, something within her life began shifting.
Soon after she started chanting daimoku, she experienced her first major breakthrough.
She was selected as a teacher in the Delhi administration.
At the time, it felt like a blessing.
Later, through deeper faith and study, she understood it differently:
It was the Mystic Law responding to sincere prayer and determination.
For the first time, Neha began believing that destiny itself could be transformed.
Advancing Through Every Challenge
After marriage, Neha entered a large joint family with limited financial resources.
Her husband earned less than she did.
Her mother-in-law was battling cancer.
Seven family members lived together in a tiny one-bedroom home.
Life was crowded, exhausting, and demanding.
During the enshrinement ceremony of their Gohonzon, a leader encouraged them to pray for “the best place for the Gohonzon.”
Though their current reality seemed far removed from such a dream, those words stayed deeply in Neha’s heart.
Over the years, the family welcomed two children — a daughter in 2000 and a son in 2005.
While balancing:
A full-time teaching job
Caregiving responsibilities
Household duties
Parenting
Neha continued participating joyfully in Gakkai activities.
She traveled with her children using public transport, visited members regularly, and encouraged others despite her own limitations.
As her husband took on greater organizational responsibilities, Neha supported him wholeheartedly.
Together, they made a determination:
To advance side by side in faith regardless of circumstances.
Challenges continued, but so did their determination.
The Seed of a Mission
Then came another difficult family challenge.
Neha’s father was diagnosed with cancer and given only three months to live.
Instead of surrendering to fear, the family challenged the situation with abundant daimoku.
Remarkably, he lived fearlessly for five more years.
But one seemingly ordinary moment soon became a major turning point in Neha’s life.
At a Cubs Division meeting, her young daughter was selected as the emcee.
As she stood speaking softly with barely audible confidence, Neha felt a deep pain in her heart.
Her daughter’s hesitation reflected something much larger.
In that instant, a powerful determination arose within her:
To help children develop courage and confidence.
At that time, the Cubs Division had not yet been formally established within BSG.
Yet internally, a profound mission had already taken root within her life.
What began as concern for one child slowly became a vow to nurture countless children.
Transforming Herself First
Neha began supporting Cubs activities more actively within the district.
She worked to create joyful spaces where children could:
Participate freely
Take small responsibilities
Develop confidence naturally
But through this process, she realized something important.
If she truly wanted to nurture courage in children, she first needed to transform her own life condition.
She therefore challenged herself deeply through daimoku and Sensei’s guidance to bring forth:
Patience
Warmth
Confidence
Courage
Gradually, she witnessed remarkable changes.
Children who were once quiet and withdrawn began opening up naturally.
Meetings filled with laughter, energy, and participation.
These transformations strengthened Neha’s conviction even further.
She became deeply convinced that sincere prayer combined with compassionate action could transform not only one’s own life, but also the lives of others.
Her faith deepened through witnessing the limitless potential of children.
Growing Together With Kosen-rufu
Over the years, Neha continued taking responsibility at various levels:
Group
Block
District
Chapter
Region
Zone
At every stage, her core determination remained unchanged:
To raise courageous children who would contribute toward the future of kosen-rufu.
Then, at the beginning of 2025, she received responsibility as an HDC in a struggling district.
The district faced multiple difficulties:
Very low meeting attendance
Few VC subscriptions
Geographical distance between members
Weak member connections
Initially, attendance at discussion meetings hovered around only eight or nine people.
As Neha began visiting members and listening to their struggles, she noticed something honestly within herself.
Her own busy schedule had created inertia.
Before encouraging others fully, she needed to defeat that tendency first.
Through daimoku and study, her inner state gradually shifted.
And naturally, her actions became bolder and more consistent.
Reviving the Spirit of the District
Taking deeply to heart Sensei’s guidance that:
“Discussion meetings are the heart of the Soka Gakkai.”
(WCHP-3, Kosen-rufu and World Peace, p. 138)
The leaders made a strong determination to revive members’ spirit.
Together, they began:
Alliance daimoku sessions
Studying The New Human Revolution
Organizing weekday meetings in smaller blocks
Increasing regular home visits
Slowly but steadily, something beautiful began happening.
Members naturally started visiting and encouraging one another.
The district atmosphere transformed.
Breakthroughs followed everywhere.
One women’s division member who had been unable to attend meetings because of Sunday work schedules received a new job with weekends off and a twenty percent salary increase.
Another member revived her faith and opened her home for meetings.
The district women’s division leader fulfilled her long-cherished dream of purchasing a new house despite financial limitations.
Men’s division participation doubled.
Future division and youth division strength also grew.
VC and FDT subscriptions increased significantly.
As encouragement spread, members began creating visible victories in their own lives.
The Family’s Transformation
At home too, the family experienced steady transformation.
Their finances improved gradually.
Neha’s husband received multiple promotions.
Eventually, the family moved into a home nearly eight times larger than the tiny one-bedroom space where they had once struggled together.
And at the center of the new home stood the Gohonzon — exactly as they had once prayed.
Meanwhile, Neha’s once-shy daughter transformed into a confident young woman.
Last year, she represented the Global Mental Health Action Network at the United Nations as a youth representative and addressed policy discussions at the forum.
Her son too steadily developed both confidence and academic excellence.
As a teacher, Neha also found immense fulfillment supporting students from difficult backgrounds, many of whom later became successful professionals and entrepreneurs.
The same woman who once wondered whether destiny could change had now become someone helping transform countless lives.
A Line That Stayed With Me
“Discussion meetings are the heart of the Soka Gakkai.”
Reflection
Children often mirror the life condition of the adults around them.
When adults challenge their own fear, negativity, and limitations, children naturally begin developing confidence too.
Neha’s journey shows that real encouragement begins with self-transformation.
Sometimes, a deeply personal struggle becomes the very doorway through which we discover our lifelong mission.
And when one person begins changing sincerely, entire families, districts, and future generations can gradually transform.
