Leading a Triumphant Life Based on Faith in the Mystic Law

Rajesh Verma was only seventeen when he lost his father.

At the funeral, a distant uncle quietly expressed doubts about whether the family would survive the difficult years ahead.

Those words stayed with Rajesh deeply.

His struggle began with a modest monthly salary of just 700 rupees.

In 1990, his family encountered Nichiren Buddhism.

As a young men’s division member, Rajesh received rigorous Sokahan training.

That training gradually built a strong foundation of trust, discipline, work ethic, and character in his life.

Eventually, he started a small business.

In 1993, he got married and was later blessed with two daughters and a son.

Over time, however, family responsibilities and business pressures slowly pulled him away from organizational activities.

Though he continued chanting, he became increasingly disconnected from the Gakkai.

Sometimes, we do not drift away from faith suddenly — but slowly, through the distractions and burdens of daily life.

When Life Began Falling Apart

After fifteen years of marriage, Rajesh’s life entered an extremely painful phase.

Severe turbulence developed in his matrimonial relationship, eventually leading to legal disputes and police complaints.

At one point, he was forced to leave his own home.

The deepest pain, however, was separation from his children.

Despite court-approved visitation rights, he was unable to even speak to them for nearly five years.

The emotional stress also began affecting his business badly.

During this painful period, Rajesh reconnected seriously with Buddhist practice and the Gakkai organization.

He consistently sought guidance from senior leaders.

Gradually, he made a powerful determination:

To transform his karma into mission.

Rather than blaming others, Rajesh began focusing on his own human revolution.

He realized that true transformation had to begin within his own life first.

Along with sincere chanting, he deepened his study, began taking meeting responsibilities, and started delivering Value Creation guidance regularly.

BSG gradually became his extended family.

The youth division members felt like his own children.

During this period, these words from Ikeda Sensei deeply touched his heart:

“The power of one genuinely committed individual can surpass that of a force of one million. When we change the single element of mind and thus transform ourselves, our environment changes, the world changes.”

(Daily Encouragement, July 24, 2018)

Rajesh received the Gohonzon, and his prayers deepened further.

Gradually, the bitterness and resentment surrounding his marriage began dissolving.

For the first time, he could see how this painful struggle had pushed him toward profound inner transformation.

What once appeared to be punishment slowly became the training ground for his human revolution.

Turning Suffering Into Contribution

Instead of remaining consumed by personal pain, Rajesh began focusing intensely on the happiness and victories of members around him.

He chanted one million daimoku with a determination for members to become victorious.

At the same time, he opened a new business outlet and continued challenging himself professionally.

Despite demanding work schedules, he consistently conducted home visits, encouraged members, studied guidance together, and prayed for others’ happiness.

One of his greatest joys came when several men’s division members shared their own victory experiences in meetings.

Through supporting others, Rajesh slowly healed his own heart as well.

Visible Rewards of Invisible Effort

During this phase, this passage from Nichiren Daishonin became deeply meaningful to him:

“Where there is unseen virtue, there will be visible reward.”

(“Unseen Virtue and Visible Reward,” WND-1, p. 907)

Over time, Rajesh’s life began expanding in completely unexpected ways.

He became an honorary member of several NGOs working in areas such as:

Community service

Human rights

Child welfare

Support for broken families

Through Rotary International, he also contributed toward social justice, polio eradication, and vocational support for underprivileged communities.

Within just a few years, he received multiple social recognition awards.

He was awarded a doctorate by a university in South Korea and later received a postdoctorate recognition from Delaware University in the United States.

He also attended important SGI training programs including the Indo-Japan Youth Meeting and Daiseido Training Course.

Externally, his life was flourishing.

But the most emotional breakthrough was still waiting to happen.

The Return of His Daughters

After five painful years of silence, Rajesh’s daughters finally spoke to him again on Father’s Day.

Eventually, the legal disputes reached the Supreme Court and ended amicably through divorce.

However, custody of the children remained with their mother since they were still minors.

Then, only a few months later, his ex-wife suddenly became critically ill and was admitted to the ICU.

The treatment expenses were extremely high.

When his daughters informed him about the situation, Rajesh immediately handed over the Mediclaim policy he had quietly continued renewing for his ex-wife all those years.

The insurance covered all the expenses.

His daughters were deeply shocked.

After years of pain and litigation, how could he still respond with such compassion?

At that moment, they witnessed the true power of human revolution.

Filled with curiosity and admiration, his daughters began learning about Buddhism and eventually started practicing themselves.

A few months later, after turning eighteen, both daughters came to live with him.

For Rajesh, it felt like receiving back a priceless treasure.

A Life Expanding Beyond Expectations

Professionally too, Rajesh’s life expanded tremendously.

He became director in multiple companies, advisor to technology startups, and consultant to a large corporate group.

He was appointed National Executive Member in the Confederation of MSMEs of India under FICCI and contributed toward government policy discussions through industry chambers.

Even at this stage of life, Rajesh challenged himself academically.

Inspired by clearing BSG examinations, he enrolled for an LLB degree.

Not only did he complete the degree, but he also topped his college with distinction.

Later, for his contributions to renewable and clean energy, he received the Bharat Gaurav Award at a ceremony held at the Parliament of France in Paris.

Today, his daughters are progressing successfully in their careers.

His brother is flourishing in the film industry.

His sister is an accomplished attorney in the United States.

His eighty-year-old mother lives joyfully.

Three generations of the family now practice Buddhism together.

Recently, Rajesh met the same uncle who had once doubted their future.

After hearing the family’s journey, the uncle himself began chanting.

The family once surrounded by uncertainty had now become a source of hope for others.

A Line That Stayed With Me

“When we change the single element of mind and thus transform ourselves, our environment changes, the world changes.”

Reflection

Many people believe victory means defeating external problems.

But Buddhism teaches that the deepest victory is transforming hatred into compassion, despair into mission, and suffering into value.

Rajesh’s journey reminds us that human revolution is not theoretical.

It is the courageous process of continuing to expand one’s heart even after betrayal, pain, and loss.

Sometimes, the greatest proof of faith is not how high we rise — but how compassionately we respond after being hurt.

Key Takeaways

Human revolution begins when we stop blaming others and transform ourselves.

Supporting others can heal our own suffering deeply.

Compassion has the power to rebuild broken relationships.

Invisible efforts in faith eventually create visible rewards.

True victory means becoming a source of hope for others.

Forward With Determination

Today, Rajesh remains deeply determined to:

Strengthen members through encouragement and dialogue

Continue contributing to society through value creation

Raise capable successors in faith

Repay his debt of gratitude to his mentor through lifelong action

Above all, he remains committed to empowering others with the light of the Mystic Law for the rest of his life.

Inspired by a published Buddhist experience and retold with commentary, reflection, and adapted storytelling.
