From Hearing Loss to International Gold: A Journey of Unstoppable Courage
From Hearing Loss to International Gold: A Journey of Unstoppable Courage
Hello everyone. My name is Kartikeya Goel, and I would like to share how faith, determination, and persistent effort helped me transform what once appeared to be my greatest limitations into my greatest strength.
I was born a healthy child, but at the age of four, I contracted meningitis. Although I survived, the illness permanently affected two of my senses. My eyesight became weak, and I developed severe hearing loss.
Growing up with these challenges was not always easy.
While my early childhood was joyful, school life presented many obstacles. For children with hearing impairments, simply gaining admission to a regular school and learning alongside others can itself become a challenge. Fortunately, I was blessed with caring teachers who created a supportive environment where I could continue learning and growing.
When I was eight years old, my parents encouraged me to join karate and chess classes so that I could channel my energy positively and develop confidence. I enjoyed both activities, but eventually had to leave chess because the long tournament hours strained my eyesight. Karate, however, became an important part of my life, and I quietly nurtured the hope that one day it would open bigger opportunities for me.
In October 2017, my mother began practicing Nichiren Buddhism.
Listening to the rhythm of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo inspired me to chant along with her. Gradually, I noticed a remarkable change within myself. I became more positive, energetic, and determined every day.
At that time, India did not have separate karate categories for specially-abled athletes. Competing against everyone else was extremely challenging, yet I continued practicing with complete sincerity.
Then, something wonderful happened.
In 2018, after I had already begun competing at state and national championships, the Indian Karate Association introduced an open category for specially-abled participants. Suddenly, opportunities that had never existed before became available.
That year, I proudly won both gold and bronze medals at national competitions and even had the opportunity to share this victory in a discussion meeting.
These successes taught me an important lesson:
Never limit your dreams because of your circumstances.
In 2021, I achieved another milestone by scoring 92% in my Class 12 examinations and securing admission to Symbiosis Centre of Management Studies, Noida.
Each victory strengthened my confidence to dream even bigger.
Inspired by Sensei's encouragement never to give up, I decided that I wanted to compete internationally. When the US Open Karate Championship was announced for 2022 after the pandemic, I made a firm determination to participate and prove the power of human potential on the global stage.
But making a determination was only the beginning.
I knew I needed to transform myself physically and mentally.
At that time, I had become overweight. I consulted a nutritionist, committed myself to disciplined workouts, followed a healthy diet, and lost 14 kilograms in just two months.
To improve my karate skills further, I regularly traveled to Gurgaon to train under some of India's finest coaches. This meant missing college classes, but when I explained my goal, my college fully supported me by granting me a month's leave so that I could prepare wholeheartedly.
Alongside my physical training, I remained active in Buddhist activities. I served as an emcee during discussion meetings, shared my experiences, and continued introducing my friends to Buddhism. During this period, four of my friends also began practicing.
Whenever anxiety appeared, I sought guidance from my leaders, studied encouraging writings, and refreshed my determination.
Finally, the day arrived for my journey to the United States.
My father and I left India on April 13, 2022. But almost immediately, another challenge appeared.
Our flight was cancelled.
Instead of the planned two-day journey, repeated rerouting stretched our travel to five exhausting days. We finally reached the United States on April 17th, just before the tournament was about to begin.
The registration process had already started several days earlier, and for a moment it seemed my opportunity might slip away.
Thankfully, I managed to complete all the required formalities just in time.
Throughout this stressful journey, I constantly encouraged myself by reading Sensei's book Dialogue for the Future , which my mother had lovingly given me before I left India. Whenever nervousness surfaced, I would open the book, read a few pages, and regain my confidence.
Then came the competition.
I gave everything I had.
When the final results were announced, I heard the unforgettable words:
"The gold medal goes to India... Kartikeya Goel."
In that moment, years of hard work, countless hours of training, and every challenge I had overcome came together in a single overwhelming feeling of gratitude.
I was blessed to win two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal at the US Open Karate Championship 2022.
Returning home, I received congratulations from many distinguished personalities, and my photograph carrying the Indian flag and my medals appeared on the front page of my college prospectus.
Looking back, I realize that my greatest victory was never merely winning medals.
It was learning that physical limitations never determine the limits of one's life. What truly determines our future is our courage to keep moving forward, our willingness to challenge ourselves every day, and our determination never to surrender to circumstances.
Today, I continue to challenge myself with the spirit of joyful effort, striving to create many more victories that will make my family, my country, and my mentor proud. No matter what obstacles appear before me, I have resolved to keep advancing with hope, courage, and an undefeated spirit.
