Finding My Mission Beyond Every Setback

Discovering a Higher Purpose

As a quiet and introverted young woman, I dreamed of serving my country as a fighter pilot. Although I successfully cleared important selection stages, repeated setbacks prevented me from realizing that dream. Those disappointments left me questioning my future and wondering where I truly belonged.

During this uncertain phase, my elder sister introduced me to Nichiren Buddhism. From the very beginning, I found tremendous hope in Ikeda Sensei's encouragement. I gradually realized that the greatest way to serve society was not merely through a profession, but by transforming my own life and helping others do the same.

Every morning and evening, I encouraged myself with Toda Sensei's words to Ikeda Sensei:

"Please keep on striving alongside me to see just how the results of our practice are manifested in the future."

— The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin and the Mentor-Disciple Relationship , p. 42

Those words became the rhythm of my daily life.

Transforming Myself First

As I deepened my faith through daimoku, study, and participation in Gakkai activities, I discovered that my greatest challenge was not my career—it was my own inner life.

Around this time, my relationship with my brother became increasingly strained. His criticism affected me deeply and often disturbed the harmony within our family. Rather than trying to change him, I decided to transform myself first. I included him sincerely in my prayers, strengthened my study, and consciously responded with patience instead of anger.

Little by little, I noticed my own heart changing. Instead of reacting emotionally, I began responding with compassion and understanding.

Strengthening My Mission

My training within the Gakkai further strengthened my determination to dedicate my life to kosen-rufu. Although financial limitations delayed my flight training, I refused to allow circumstances to determine my future. I immersed myself in studying the Gosho, The New Human Revolution , and Value Creation , while continuing to encourage fellow members through home visits and dialogues.

I challenged myself to chant abundant daimoku, make sincere financial contributions, introduce others to Buddhism, and support members consistently. During this period, remarkable changes began appearing throughout my family. Financial issues gradually eased, my father resolved long-standing legal matters, and he developed deep respect for my Buddhist practice.

I also found meaningful work that allowed me to begin building my professional career with confidence and purpose.

Growing Through Responsibility

As my responsibilities within the youth division expanded, I embraced every opportunity to encourage young women across different cities. Daily home visits, dialogues, and sincere encouragement became joyful expressions of my faith.

The transformation within my family also continued. My relationship with my brother completely changed. Through open-hearted dialogue, mutual understanding replaced years of distance, and he even began exploring Buddhist practice himself.

Turning Challenges into Actual Proof

One of my greatest challenges came when my mother developed a serious heart condition. Doctors were deeply concerned about her health, and our family faced tremendous uncertainty.

Rather than becoming fearful, I strengthened my determination. Every day I chanted with gratitude and vow, deepened my Buddhist study, balanced work with extensive member care, and focused on encouraging others despite my own anxiety.

As I continued striving for others' happiness, many youth members began reporting victories in their own lives. At the same time, my mother's health steadily improved beyond expectations. Watching her regain strength while also developing her own appreciation for Buddhism filled me with profound gratitude.

Professionally, I also found opportunities to contribute creatively by proposing new sustainability initiatives that were well received within my organization.

Looking Ahead

Today, I no longer measure success only by achieving a childhood dream. My greatest joy comes from helping others discover hope, courage, and purpose through this practice.

I remain determined to begin my commercial flight training, continue strengthening youth across different regions, deepen my mentor-disciple spirit, introduce many more people to Nichiren Buddhism, and demonstrate the greatness of this philosophy through every aspect of my life.
