Educating Every Child, One Heart at a Time
Educating Every Child, One Heart at a Time
I never imagined that the deepest pain of my life would eventually reveal my greatest mission.
I married at a young age and was blessed with two wonderful children. However, my marriage was filled with unhappiness, emotional suffering, and loneliness. For years I struggled with depression, wondering whether life would ever change. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to rebuild my life. I completed my education, became a teacher, and soon afterward found myself raising my son and daughter alone as a single parent.
Although securing a government teaching position brought financial stability, my daily life remained challenging. My school was located far from home, requiring long hours of travel while my children stayed behind by themselves. I constantly worried about them while trying to fulfill my responsibilities as both a mother and a teacher.
Everything began changing after I encountered Nichiren Buddhism.
As I studied Ikeda Sensei's guidance, attended discussion meetings, and sincerely chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, my confidence steadily grew. Instead of seeing myself as a victim of circumstances, I began seeing every challenge as an opportunity for human revolution.
After my divorce was finalized, I purchased a small piece of land and made a determination that my new home would also become a place for advancing kosen-rufu. At that time there were only two practicing members nearby, but I prayed with conviction to create a vibrant community of faith. Through home visits, heartfelt dialogues, and consistent encouragement, many new people gradually began practicing, and together we built an atmosphere filled with friendship, hope, and mutual support.
Not long afterward, another unexpected benefit appeared. I was transferred to a government school located just a few minutes from my home, allowing me to spend far more time with my children while continuing my work as an educator.
When I first arrived at the new school, however, I was shocked by what I found. The campus lacked basic facilities, discipline was poor, and the learning environment offered very little hope for the students.
Rather than becoming discouraged, I based myself on prayer and determined to transform the school into a place where every child could flourish.
One day, while teaching in class, I noticed a little girl quietly looking through the classroom window. Curious, I explored the surrounding neighborhood and discovered something that deeply changed my life.
Hundreds of children were living in extreme poverty. Many spent their days collecting waste, begging on the streets, or wandering without any education. Some had never attended school. Others lacked proper clothing, shoes, or even basic hygiene. Seeing their circumstances broke my heart.
I knew I could not simply walk away.
I began visiting their families personally, encouraging parents to send their children to school. When basic necessities became barriers, I opened my own home so the children could bathe before class. Friends donated clothes, shoes, and school supplies. Although many people questioned my efforts and some even opposed them, I continued moving forward.
When formal admission was initially denied, I refused to give up. Instead, I taught the children outside the school campus every day while continuing to chant for wisdom and harmony among everyone involved.
At the same time, I intensified my Buddhist practice. I conducted home visits, encouraged members, participated wholeheartedly in organizational activities, and prayed that these children would not simply receive an education but also discover dignity, confidence, and hope for their future.
Gradually, everything began changing.
Support arrived from unexpected places. Volunteers, donors, government officials, and members of society stepped forward to help. The children were finally admitted into school, and improvements to the school's infrastructure soon followed. Clean drinking water, proper sanitation facilities, classroom furniture, books, a library, and many other long-awaited resources became available.
Watching children who had once wandered the streets now enter classrooms with smiles on their faces became one of the greatest joys of my life.
This experience awakened an even larger determination within me. Instead of limiting my prayers to one school, I began praying for educational transformation throughout the entire state. Inspired by this vision, I actively communicated with educational authorities and continued advocating for improvements in government schools.
Over the following years, numerous educational initiatives expanded, benefiting countless students far beyond my own classroom. Libraries were established, infrastructure improved, and increasing numbers of children gained access to quality education.
Alongside these developments, my own professional journey also flourished. The school I served was recognized for its remarkable transformation, and I received appreciation from educational institutions and government organizations for my work. Yet every recognition reminded me that these achievements belonged not to me alone, but to the power of sincere prayer, compassionate action, and unwavering faith.
Meanwhile, my personal life also underwent a profound transformation. My children grew into capable, independent adults pursuing successful careers. The loneliness, bitterness, and sadness that once dominated my life gradually gave way to gratitude, confidence, and joy. The person who had once struggled to find acceptance now found herself surrounded by friendship, trust, and love.
Looking back, I realize that Buddhism did far more than solve my personal problems. It transformed my understanding of what education truly means. Teaching is not merely transferring knowledge; it is helping every child awaken to their limitless potential regardless of their background or circumstances.
Today, I continue praying to contribute to educational reform, encourage countless young people, and help create schools where every child is treated with dignity and compassion. My determination is to continue expanding this mission, foster many more capable individuals, and prove through my own life that when one person's human revolution begins, it naturally becomes a source of hope for countless others.
