Blooming Through Every Storm

Aditi Rao began practicing Nichiren Buddhism in 2015.

Over time, the practice gradually transformed not only her own life, but also her extended family.

Eventually, three Gohonzon came to be enshrined within the family.

But beyond visible benefits, something deeper was unfolding inside her life.

While studying at Nalanda, Aditi came across Ikeda Sensei’s 2016 Peace Proposal.

As she read it, she experienced a profound internal shift.

Her mission suddenly felt clear.

She redirected her career path away from traditional architecture and toward climate change, resilient development, and disaster management.

Today, she works as an architect, urban planner, and climate resilience professional.

Yet for Aditi, her work gradually became much more than a profession.

It became an expression of her vow for humanity and kosen-rufu.

Her career itself became connected to her deeper sense of purpose.

A Vow During a Time of Crisis

On March 16, 2018, while chanting at Daiseido, Aditi made a deep personal vow:

To advance in complete oneness with her mentor.

Life soon tested that determination severely.

In 2021, she developed deep vein thrombosis — a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition.

The diagnosis forced her to confront fear and uncertainty directly.

Instead of merely praying for recovery, Aditi deepened her prayer to understand the meaning and mission behind the challenge.

A senior in faith encouraged her to write to Sensei.

In January 2022, she received Sensei’s encouragement.

Those words became a tremendous source of strength.

Gradually, through consistent daimoku and treatment, she overcame the condition by 2023.

The struggle deepened her faith and strengthened her determination to live with purpose.

When Everything Suddenly Collapsed

Then came 2024 — a year filled with both victory and crisis.

Professionally, her project won an international award.

She was promised both promotion and salary growth.

Everything appeared to be moving upward.

Then suddenly, life changed.

In March, her father suffered a heart attack.

And in July, without warning, her organization abruptly asked her to resign.

Her responsibilities were removed.

No transition plan was offered.

Even a sixty-percent salary reduction was attempted.

The emotional impact was intense.

She felt angry, humiliated, and deeply frustrated.

For a period of time, confusion and fear overwhelmed her.

The career she had worked so hard to build suddenly seemed to disappear beneath her feet.

The White Lily Determination

Amid this turmoil, Aditi was inducted as a White Lily in August.

At that moment, she made a strong personal determination:

Never to say “no” to any White Lily duty.

A senior leader encouraged her to look beyond external circumstances and focus instead on transforming her life condition itself.

That guidance became a turning point.

Gradually, Aditi stopped focusing solely on finding another job.

Instead, she concentrated on:

Chanting deeply

Studying earnestly

Supporting members

Carrying out BTS responsibilities sincerely

Ironically, the sudden professional collapse had created something unexpected:

Time.

Time to pray deeply.

Time to reflect honestly.

Time to polish her inner life.

Yet the process was not easy.

Many days, she chanted through tears, unsure whether her prayers were reaching anywhere at all.

But gradually, she recognized that her greatest battle was not external.

It was internal.

She began consciously cultivating:

Humility

Vigilance

Wisdom

Steadfast faith

As her inner state transformed, her entire life condition began changing.

Blooming Through BTS Efforts

As Aditi continued saying “yes” to White Lily duties, remarkable shifts began appearing.

By her third duty, she unexpectedly received a call from her former organization.

They now wanted her to return temporarily and lead an important milestone project.

At the same time, entirely new professional opportunities began flowing toward her.

International organizations and major consulting firms approached her for climate and disaster resilience roles.

Even her exit from the previous organization transformed dramatically.

Instead of humiliation and financial loss, she left with:

No pay deduction

No salary cuts

A respectful farewell

Dignity and gratitude

Exactly as she had determined in prayer.

The very environment that once caused anger now became a source of respect and closure.

Winning Together With Members

Meanwhile, women’s division members she supported also began reporting breakthroughs.

One member became active again after six years away from practice.

Another developed the courage to fight injustice in her environment.

One women’s division member opened her home for meetings and learned gongyo.

Another overcame difficult health challenges.

Perhaps most touching was one member facing sudden homelessness.

Together, through encouragement and support, they were able to secure a safe and stable home for him.

At home too, victories appeared steadily.

When her mother suddenly fell ill during Diwali, Aditi chanted beside her for three continuous hours.

Her mother recovered fully.

Her father’s follow-up cardiac reports also returned normal.

As she supported others sincerely, protection and breakthroughs naturally appeared within her own family too.

Unexpected Doors Opening

Professionally, even greater opportunities soon emerged.

Aditi was selected for a prestigious international program in climate change and public health.

She became the only South Asian recipient of a ninety-five percent scholarship to study at Yale University.

Meanwhile, her independent architectural practice also began growing steadily.

Then another major challenge suddenly surfaced.

After accepting a role at a Big Four consulting firm, the hiring process was abruptly halted because of alleged criminal cases connected to family matters.

Aditi was shocked.

She had never been summoned to court nor involved personally in such proceedings.

At that moment, several people emerged like shoten zenjin:

Her program manager protected and guided her

Her siblings helped gather critical documents

The HR representative sincerely listened to her explanation

Eventually, the offer moved successfully into final approval.

At the same time, she continued supporting BSG activities wholeheartedly as a White Lily.

In November, her district was adjudged the Best District.

Then, on January 6th, the final breakthrough arrived.

She received confirmation of:

A senior role

A forty-percent salary increase

A joining bonus

Today, she independently handles the Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction portfolio for Delhi.

Her flexible work-from-home schedule now allows her to balance both professional growth and Gakkai responsibilities joyfully.

The same year that once seemed full of collapse had quietly become one of her greatest victories.

A Line That Stayed With Me

“If you propagate it, devils will arise without fail. If they did not, there would be no way of knowing that this is the correct teaching.”

(“Letter to the Brothers,” WND-1, p. 501)

Reflection

Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs begin with situations that initially feel unfair, humiliating, or deeply painful.

At such moments, Buddhism teaches us not merely to escape difficulty, but to transform our life condition through it.

Aditi’s journey shows that behind-the-scenes efforts performed sincerely often polish our lives in unseen ways.

Real strength is not built when life goes smoothly.

It is forged when we continue saying “yes” to growth, responsibility, and contribution even while uncertain about the future.
